In September 1965 Congress passed the Housing and Urban Development Act, which established the cabinet-level Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society reforms, HUD was created to administer and coordinate all federal housing programs. It took over the functions of the Housing and Home Finance Agency. During President Ronald Reagan’s administration, the U.S. government investigated the corrupt practices of HUD and convicted several HUD officials. HUD currently controls billions of dollars in government grants and loans.
